PUTIN ARREST WARRANT ICC tap dancing underscores ANC’s policy muddle

Stripped of all the hype, the self- created crisis facing President Cyril Ramaphosa’s administration boils down to whether it has the gumption to arrest Russian President Vladimir Putin when he arrives in South Africa to attend the BRICS Summit later in August this year.

As a signatory of the Rome Statute that established the International Criminal Court (ICC), South Africa is duty-bound to arrest Putin after the ICC issued a warrant for his arrest for the alleged war crimes in Ukraine.

Ramaphosa’s vacillation on whether the ANC has decided to withdraw from the ICC comes as no surprise. He has not been a man of conviction. Playing to the gallery
