Corruption and accountability revive issue of electoral reform

DIRECTLY ELECTED MPS

RAMPANT corruption and a lack of accountability in government have revived the issue of electoral reform, which allows citizens to elect MPs.

This follows calls for the government to implement the Van Zyl Slabbert Commission’s majority recommendation that 75% of MPs should be elected by the citizens. This was after ANC and MK veteran Omry Makgoale drafted a discussion paper for mobilising ANC members to adopt the commission’s recommendations. The draft was adopted by the 70s group of the Black Consciousness Movement.
