TATE BRITAIN’S “The Rossettis,” a new exhibition on display through September 24, 2023, upsets everything we thought we knew about Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828–1882), the enigmatic artist who helped organize Britain’s first avant-garde movement, the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood (PRB). Rossetti’s work has been both beloved and abhorred; while some see visions of dreamy, sensual romance personified in the feminine, others find a kind of repellent idea of woman that is equal parts pure and wicked.
