Back when the Congress of a young United States got down to authorizing a coinage system and a Mint, the smallest of the small was the humble half cent. By our standards today, it was actually a pretty hefty coin, having a diameter close to that of our modern quarter. It had a decent run, from the 1790’s up to the 1850’s, but it is often overlooked or forgotten by collectors today. Still, the series can be a fascinating one.
