The Mariana Trench, in the western Pacific Ocean, is the deepest place on Earth. Its lowest point is nearly seven miles (11,000 meters) below the ocean’s surface. Humans have only visited briefly—and carefully, because of the extreme pressure at the bottom of the sea.
