Applications invited for hydropower licences

The Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) has opened a window for licence applications to use water resources, watercourses and departmental infrastructure to generate hydropower and alternative energy.

Janse Rabie, Agri SA’s policy and legal executive, told that farmers who wanted to generate hydropower for their own use would also have to apply for these licences. He added that the licence itself was not expensive, but the application would have to be accompanied by an environmental impact assessment, which was costly.
