Whenever I walked down Park Lane in London, I’d stop outside the impressive McLaren showroom where a silver F1 was on display on a black plinth. With clever lighting, the supercar looked dazzling and I wondered why it remained there for so long. I was aware of the £600,000 asking price – this was the early 1990s – which was an absolute fortune then, but it was F1 designer Gordon Murray’s masterpiece, the best road car ever made.
