What next for CarPlay?

AT APPLE’S WORLDWIDE Developers Conference in June 2022, Apple unveiled its plans for the future of CarPlay — and it looks incredible. While up until now CarPlay has been limited largely to a car’s in–dash display, its reach could soon extend even further, taking in any and all displays available in the car, including the instrument cluster.

The aim is to create more of a unified and customizable in–car experience that’ll be better than the mishmash of interfaces and usability options thatjoin. This means that not only will next–generation CarPlay be able to offer up things like Maps and Music, but will also be able to serve up your car’s speed and mileage readings, fuel consumption and more. Plus, it’ll also offer features such as weather reports, and even HomeKit controls via widgets — handy for opening the garage door in advance of your arrival home — while also controlling interior heating and cooling, electric windows, and heated seats. There’ll even be a new Radio app with an Apple Music–like interface that includes playback controls and artwork, all of which makes you wonder where Apple might go next.
