Foynes Line reconstruction tender set to be let

IARNRÓD Éireann issued a tender to rebuild the mothballed Limerick to Foynes railway line on July 31, taking political stakeholders by surprise.

The mothballed 42km line which connects the port of Foynes on the River Shannon with the existing rail network at Limerick, also serves the village of Adare which will host the 2027 Golf Ryder Cup.

The line which carried grain, coal, oil, molasses and fertiliser before revenue earning freight services ceased in early 2000 was last visited by the annual weed spray train on May 7, 2002 before seeing its last movement on January 9, 2003, when an inspection car traversed the line. It has since been mothballed and disconnected from the network at Limerick.
