arving an intimate narrative of home and heritage in her work, Sarawakian sculptor Anniketyni Madian, a 300-year-old Sarawakian folktale that depicts a tragic romance with allusions to femicide. Though the story’s climatic ending varies, the death of Dang Isah is what concludes it—her death is almost always caused by strangulation via seven strands of her own hair. Using literal symbols, textures and colours to tell this tragic tale, Madian carves houses, clouds, ships and a keris against the visceral red backdrop, which emphasises the unfortunate love story of Dang Isah.
