We started with the car around 10 years ago,” says Achim Lamparter, general project manager, 911 Dakar. Back then Porsche’s marketing people thought there wasn’t any demand for it, but Achim and some others disagreed.

The first project featured 991-based Dakar prototypes using a Carrera 4S as opposed to the 992 Carrera GTS-based production car. While it was eventually shelved, the idea never really went away. “There was a new spirit in the company, and we made another prototype,” says Achim. The Carrera GTS
