UNLESS you live on the Isle of Wight, you’ve probably never heard of Zig Zag Road in Ventnor. As the name suggests it’s a series of S-bends – roughly 1.2 miles long with an average gradient of 9.1 per cent. Admittedly not the steepest, but when you’re an eight-year-old in the back of a car which starts to lose grip and slides backwards on black ice, it feels more than steep enough – especially with a sheer drop on one side.
That lived with me until I started driving aged
