Learning objectives
■ Create a regular sketching habit
■ Draw as much as you can from life
■ Combine images
Sometimes exciting ideas for compositions can occur when you look back through your sketchbook at the drawings you've made. You may have enjoyed sketching subjects of interest without any plan of what paintings could be composed from them. Combinations not thought of at the time can emerge later. This happened to me after I decided to go to the British Museum with my sketchbook.
Museums are great places to work. There are always many interesting things on which to practise drawing skills. The objects are stationary and the lighting consistent sobe found, which will be out of the way of curious onlookers – other people are usually too busy looking at the artefacts themselves in any case to be interested in what you are doing. This is perfect if, like me, you don't like passers-by looking over your shoulder whilst you work.
