‘Coins’ Magazine Took Us There

A professor of mine, whose classes were as much about how to write effectively as they were about U.S. history, used to say: “The reader will go where you want, but you have to take him there.” Having recently heard from Maggie Pahl, numismatics editorial director for Active Interest Media, that Coins magazine has ceased publication after 68 years of serving the hobby, it struck me that that is something Coins always did. It took the reader there.

No matter who was the editor or who was the always strove to take the collector on a journey. It was a journey led by some of the biggest names in the hobby and by some who saw their first and, perhaps, only article published in its pages. It was a journey that brought along with it not only beginning collectors but hobby veterans as well. Knowledge is king in this hobby and sought to provide this through in-depth feature articles focusing on coinage history, individual series, market savvy and proven methods of collecting.
