Paris may be the country’s present-day capital, but for centuries, the Loire Valley was the regal seat of the powerful French kings. Along undulating stretches of the snaking Loire River, royalty and their courts built hundreds of opulent chateaux. Today, the Loire is just a couple of hours from Paris by train, and holds many architectural treasures worth exploring, as well as elaborate gardens, charming vineyards and beautiful villages.
