CRETE, GREECE
A mythical island closely tied to Greek legend, Crete is both the birthplace of Zeus and the home of the Minotaur. Sitting about 160km south of the mainland, it is the largest of the Greek islands – a rocky, mountainous place fringed by sandy coves and beaches, riven by canyons and littered with architectural glories. The Bronze Age Minoans built a sophisticated civilisation here, and the remains of their temples, palaces and cities (the local brandy) or tackle winding roads that rise into wild mountains, then drop into deep-blue bays.
