I sat nestled in my chair, entranced by the glassy waters below. A G&T found its way into my hand, a comfy blanket drooped over my lap. Another round of hors d’oeuvres had circled past minutes ago but my attention had shifted. As the afternoon of cruising along the mighty Zambezi - spotting hippos, crocodiles and kingfishers - melted away into an orange and then pink stillness, guests onboard the Riversong were all captivated by a deep African sunset that swallowed you whole before gently releasing you back onto dry land…
There, a marimba and djembe band played to the pulse of the African twilight. I’m not a dancer, but I danced then. As our transfer from the luxury sunset cruise drove us back to Shearwater Explorers Village in Victoria Falls a few minutes away, a herd of buffalo peacefully passed our van, their horns curled up towards the full moon. ‘This is magic,’ I thought. I had only arrived that afternoon but I felt as if I had returned to some kind of archetypal home, where life first found its beat.
An adventurous two-day itinerary arranged by Shearwater lay ahead for our group of six, in
