Last month’s article described the course of the postal strike and some of the ephemera associated with it. This second part will be a short overview of what really made it famous – the many private posts that operated during the seven weeks the posties were out on strike.
For the first time, the Government announced that the Post Office’s legal monopoly on carrying mail would be suspended for the duration of the strike, and several hundred private posts were set up throughout the country.
