MATERIALS

◯ Assorted print fabrics to total about 80cm (⅞yd). Lesley used a fat eighth of seven different print fabrics
◯ Fat quarter solid white fabric (embroidery background)
◯ 55cm (⅝yd) solid light pink fabric (lining)
◯ 15cm (¼yd) solid bright pink fabric (binding)
◯ 70cm (⅞yd) thick fusible batting
◯ Cottage Gardens Threads stranded embroidery floss in Larkspur (602)
◯ Olympus Stranded Embroidery Threads in Light Pink (123), Medium Pink (125), Dark Pink (127), Apple Green (229), Aqua (384) and Canary Yellow (553)
◯ Fusible web
◯ 40cm (½yd) lightweight fusible interfacing/stabiliser such as Vlieseline G700
◯ 30cm (12in) lace zipper
◯ One 6mm (¼in) press stud
◯ Two 20mm (¾in) flat white buttons
◯ 35cm (14in) printed blue ribbon, 25mm (1in) wide
◯ 25cm (lOin) white cotton lace, 25mm (1in) wide
◯ 9 x 7cm (3½ × 2¾in) cream wool blanketing, felt or batting (inner needlecase)
◯ Embroidery hoop and needle
◯ Sharp pencil or fine marking pen
 ◯ Machine sewing thread to match the lace zipper and print fabrics
◯ Rotary cutter, ruler and mat Sewing machine with ¼in and zipper feet
◯ General sewing supplies

Finished size: 32 x 64cm (12½ x 25in) open

Stitches used: Backstitch, blanket stitch, bullion stitch, colonial knot, detached chain (lazy daisy) stitch, fly stitch, French knot, herringbone stitch, open pinwheel blanket stitch, pinwheel blanket stitch, running stitch, stem stitch, twisted chain stitch, whipped stem stitch

Note: Read all the instructions before starting the project. It is recommended that fabrics be 100% cotton, pre-washed and well ironed. Requirements are based on fabrics 107cm (42in) wide. Seam allowances of½in are used throughout except where otherwise stated. Instructions are given for using the printed Pattern Sheet in the magazine, but you can also download the digital patterns from www.homespun.net.au and print them out.

CUTTING

1 From one of the assorted pretty print fabrics, cut:

• One rectangle, 3 × 9in (embroidered band on satchel back).
• Two rectangles, 1¾ × 12½in (spine)
• Two rectangles, 1½ × 12in (ties). Lesley used a small pink gingham in her project.

2 From the remaining six assorted pretty print fabrics, cut a total of:

• 48 squares, 2½in (patchwork) • Two rectangles, 5 × 12½ (top and flap of slim internal pocket) • One rectangle, 3 × 12½in (band above zipper on satchel back) • One • One rectangle, 3½ × 4½in (lining of needlebook) • Two squares, 3½in (small internal pockets) • Two rectangles, 2½ × 3½in (top band of small internal pockets) • One rectangle, 4½ × 7in (medium internal pocket) • One rectangle, 2½ × 8½in (internal patchwork pocket) • Six rectangles, 2½ × 4½in (internal patchwork pocket) • One rectangle, 2½ × 12½in (top band of internal patchwork pocket) • One rectangle, 4½ × 12½in (large internal pocket) • One rectangle, 1½ × 12½in (top band of large internal pocket).
