WHEN a car maker tries to move upmarket, the effects can be disastrous, but when a premium brand offers smaller cars for those who are less well heeled, it’s rarely a bad decision.
Audi, BMW and Mercedes have taken this approach by introducing small hatchbacks, each of which has allowed the marque to expand its customer base. Audi was the first, with its original A3 of 1996, and of the three premium German brands it’s also Audi that offers the smallest hatchback of all (Smart and MINI sub-brands aside).
Despite the A1 being the smallest and cheapest car in Audi’s line-up, it theoretically offers the same build quality and tech as its bigger and more expensive siblings. But does it make a decent used buy?
