The late and legendary Dan Gurney was born on this day (Thursday) in 1931. A race-winner across Formula 1, Le Mans, IndyCar, NASCAR and elsewhere, a constructor, team owner, inventor of podium champagne spraying – and would-be presidential candidate. Gurney’s CV indicates why he holds such high status within motorsport.

And reflecting this status, Goodwood at its Revival event in 2012 paid special tribute to Gurney. And it was indeed special. Lord March chauffeured Gurney in a Ford Mustang then delivered a fitting eulogy. The Royal Marines
