IN DECEMBER 2022, HEATHER DODD of Savage + Dodd Architects became the first candidate to graduate with a PhD from the new practice-based design programme at the UFS architecture school. This degree, a first in SA, is an innovative way for architects to work towards a PhD that involves a thesis focused on their own buildings – a bit like an art degree with a practical and written component that reflects on a body of work.
