From Levens Hall in Cumbria to the Palace of Versailles, and Dali’s castle at Púbol, the influence of many famous gardens can be found within the modest space surrounding David Holden and Ramesh Mootoo’s Cotswold cottage.

Tucked away in the heart of the historic village of Bisley, overlooking the picturesque Toadsmoor Valley, this gently-sloping site comfortably accommodates no fewer than 58 pieces of topiary developed over the past 20 years. These structural creations, which include balls, birds, columns and geometric shapes, provide a strong framework that brings depth and interest to the garden all year round. Come spring and summer they are the backdrop for a profusion of colourful planting, with the likes of roses, alliums, geraniums, peonies and poppies contributing to layers of colours.
