Drip, drip, drop

Plumbing problems are all too common in properties of all ages, but leaks are potentially disastrous in old houses. If pipes are corroded or damaged, water may be seeping unnoticed into surrounding timber and masonry, resulting in serious decay. Many properties also have water tanks in the loft and these, and the pipework, may be poorly insulated, so there is a danger of bursts due to freezing.

In homes built before the 1950s, lead pipes are common, steel pipes are also found, while modern ones are mainly of copper or plastic. When moving into an old property, run the water –
