I grew up in the middle-class suburbs of northern Virginia during the 1950s and ‘60s. Besides me, our family included my older sister, Elaine; our parents, Lynn and Anne Stuckey; and our cats, dogs, goldfish, turtles and parakeets.
My father's business, Stuckey Studio, opened in 1945 and was popular because people depended on professional photographers for their wedding photos and family portraits. Daddy's studio was nestled in the Clarendon section of Arlington, Va., 2 miles from Washington, D.C. At that time, only two-lane roads and a
