Reflecting Back on 60 Years of ‘News’ and a Hobby on the Road

It’s time for some reflection. It was 60 years ago that my byline first appeared in Numismatic News, in the issue that carried the dateline April 15, 1963. The announcement that I had joined the editorial staff had appeared on the front page of the previous issue, dateline April 1, 1963. I’d taken up residence in Iola, Wis., and reported for my first day of work on a cold Monday morning, March 13, 1963.

“Hi, I’m Chet,” was the rejoinder I received upon introducing myself to the only person in the building, after walking through the front door shortly before 8 a.m. and observing that the only lights on were in a small office on the left. In the brief conversation that followed, I learned that he’d arrived somewhat earlier – to clear the sidewalks of freshly fallen snow that had arrived overnight. That was my introduction to Chet Krause. I’d been hired by Ed Rochette, as the consequence of an interview visit to Iola on an even colder February day, three weeks earlier on a Saturday, when the outside temperature hovered at a bitterly cold minus-20 degrees.
