EDITOR'S LETTER

ver the past year, I have been visiting the States to meet interior designers, brands and our website’s readers, who number in the millions in America –. The trips have revealed just how varied the American interior design scene is. From rustic minimalism to glamorous hotel style and traditionally pretty, our houses (from p85) demonstrate this vast range of styles. There are noticeable design elements that American brands absolutely triumph at. Happily, they are translatable – admittedly, for some, weather allowing. The conspicuous successes include unbelievably comfortable seating, incredible passementerie and gorgeous outdoor fabrics. Inspired by my American adventures, The Decorator’s Address Book (p44) lists the very best outdoor furniture brands and we showcase trimmings in All in the Detail (p53) and lounging in The Rise of the Snug (p71). In Shake it Up (p151), the classic American Shaker kitchen is revisited, getting a much bolder look in 2023. Take it Outside (p141) explores how luxury outdoor baths and showers can work here. ‘Evidence of hand’, or handmade, is another American idée fixe found throughout the issue. Objects of Desire (p15) is a great place to start.

Gather Round
To create an impression that an interior has evolved organically over time is one thing in an old country house, but it’s quite another challenge in a new-build apartment. Here it is necessary to work that much harder and be more inventive – or brave
