It all started as a way to fundraise towards getting a [bike] pump track and a scooter track at the school,” explains Kym Wylie, the brains behind Wellington’s latest car event. That simple idea evolved into Wheels at Whitby, which sadly was delayed not once, but twice due to Covid in 2022. So when it finally took place on 4 March, it wasn’t just a long-awaited event for the schools and kids alike, but a huge relief to all involved that it finally happened.

Although it would be easy to assume an event at a primary school would editor Todd Wylie for far longer than she will admit. That means that she’s experienced countless car events both here in New Zealand and abroad as media, spectator, and car owner. So her knowledge and enthusiasm meant it didn’t take long for her to gather a crew of volunteers to form a committee to make it all happen… little did they know, the delays would drag out the build-up.
