The image of a timid, young and naïve Faith Kipyegon strutting the course barefoot at the World Cross Country Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland, dominated talk among athletics lovers in 2010.
Kipyegon, then only 16 years old, went on to finish fourth, but it was her decision to run barefoot that caught the media' – and the world's – attention.
Kipyegon remembers with a nostalgic smile howher journey started: “I had a sponsor, Nike, but when I started running with spikes, I felt uncomfortable and decided to remove them. I was not used to them. I felt that they were slowing me down, so I decided to run barefoot.”
