NICK ALDIS HAS proven himself to be a master of self-invention and self-reinvention. The man once known as Magnus throughout most of a six-year run in TNA Wrestling in the early-2010s re-established himself in recent years as the most dominant NWA World heavyweight champion of the 21st century. Now, he finds himself in a new chapter of his career, and, as of this writing, he is one of the hottest free agents in the sport.
Aldis’ parting of ways with the National Wrestling Alliance—and, particularly, with NWA President Billy Corgan—was not a pretty one. The public split was covered at length by wrestling media last year. Despite how it ended, there’s no denying that run was a major turning point in Aldis’ career. Years from now, it’s entirely possible that it will be remembered as only the beginning of his rise to the top.
Anyone who has seen him in the ring knows the “National Treasure” has a great deal to offer the sport, and that goes beyond any one company. Aldis has managed to carve out a highly successful career without the help of the “Big Two.” And he’s done it by charting his own course—a very impressive feat for any wrestler, especially on the contemporary scene. Much like his one-time rival, Cody Rhodes, he’s managed to rebuild himself time and again, making himself a more valuable and in-demand star in the process.
