What makes the best head torch for sailing? Is it the red light facility? How about the ability to dim the white light? Or are you just keen to get an ultra bright light that will help you pick out mooring buoys in the gloom? And does your head torch really need to be waterproof?
To answer these vital questions, we brought together a selection of the best head torches currently on the market to put them through their yachting paces. They all have multiple modes of lighting – from narrowly focused spot lights to an array of red and boost power flood lighting – and have their own notable specialties.
All of the torches in this test are rechargeable, have at least one red light function, and provide more than one white light setting. They are varyingly waterproof.
And, it’s a diverse range, suitable for all budgets and practical uses, ranging from a little under £20 and up to a whopping £125. For this special Yachting Monthly group test, we compared each of the head torches for its style of illumination, its duration, its waterproofing, its ease of use, and, something that is becoming increasingly important these days, its eco credentials.
