THIS week's discussion point is feather quality. This can be a potential nightmare for the beginner. In fact, it is possibly the most complicated feature for the novice to grasp in their initial years in the fancy!
With the Yorkshire canary, we are striving to produce for the show bench a short tight body feather, more often associated with the smaller breeds of canaries. This must combine with long flight and tail feathers onto a much longer body. It adds up to true challenge. The show standard states:
“FEATHER Close, short and tight. Wings proportionately long and evenly carried down the centre of the back and firmly set on a compact and closely folded tail.”
