February was a kind month, sending a generous allowance of sunny days or soft days under cloud. There were a few days when it would have been wrong to say that it felt like spring because it really was spring. The mild air, the thrushes and the dunnocks, the robins and the wrens and the drumming woodpeckers were all proclaiming the season, and the sound of curlew was back in the sky and the lapwings were tumbling over the fields.
