PORTUGUESE MACAU
Macau became a colony of Portugal in 1557, the first European colony in East Asia. The area quickly became a hub of internationalof international trade until the 18th century when the British port of Hong Kong overtook it in importance. The introduction of legalised gambling in the 1960s reportedly saw Macau become a place where crime was rife.
