ZEBRA FINCHES
BY THE end of February, the breeding season is usually well underway in the zebra finch shed. However, this year it has commenced at a much steadier pace. I’d like to say this was intentional, but it was actually in response to work and family commitments - plus the lesson learned that pairing birds up when they aren’t ready is usually only going to lead to disappointment.
So the Newbreed, while the entire chestnut-flanked white flock and a few normal and black-cheeks stayed in the flight cages to build up further. Alongside the nine pairs of exhibition birds, I also paired up several pairs of orange-breasted/ black-breasted pairs to act as feeders. This unfortunately is a routine necessity when you’re trying to raise exhibition birds in number.
