Back in the days when jumpers were goalposts and it never rained during school holidays, most country boys were enthusiastic ‘bird-nesters’ and egg collections were highly prized. However, collecting wild birds’ eggs has been illegal since 1954 and the law was further tightened in 1981. Clearly, nobody wishes to inflict further damage to ailing songbird populations by plundering their nests while clambering up a gorse bush in short trousers, but the beauty and endless variety of wild birds’ eggs continues to enthral.
