MOUNT ASO VOLCANO IS IN A good mood. Plumes of gas from Nakadake crater are within the ‘safe’ range. An easterly breeze blows them away from the viewing edge and new safety bunkers promise to deflect the heftiest of lava-laden missiles should Aso lose its temper.
It’s my first trip to Japan, and much like the volcano (for now), it is instantly apparent that there’s an air of calm. The city hustle is a polite ‘bump-along’ and the airport an endless procession of respectful head bowing and chorus of (thank you). Even in the shuffle of shops, on motorways and in tiny, packed restaurants, there’s courtesy.
