The Wye Valley - straddling the border between England and Wales - has a strong claim to be the birthplace of British tourism. In 1770, Reverend William Gilpin took a two-day boat trip down the Wye from Ross to Chepstow.
His subsequent guidebook, Observations on the River Wye, was the first tour guide to be published in Britain, leading to the ‘discovery’ of the Wye Valley as a great holiday destination.
My husband, Paul, and I were staying at the Forest and Wye Valley Camping Site, on the outskirts of St Briavels in Gloucestershire.
