AFTER the‘Cumbrian Mountain Express’on January 28 this year ran with diesel assistance, all fingers were crossed that the repeat train on February 11 would be pure steam, and fortunately so it proved. I had decided not to risk a 4am start and midnight finish, and even my Scottish correspondent opted out. However, others took the risk – and it is rumoured that the lack of diesel involvement had something to do with the fact that the RailwayTouring Company boss was on the train.
