Surf the Uncertainty
When writer Kristin Canning decided to try surfing, she learned more than she expected from the mighty swells
The sea's size and ominous depth has always made me uncomfortable. And that fear of open water flooded my mind when I was invited to a retreat with SwellWomen, a female-led learn-tosurf program, in Punta Mita, Mexico
Despite my fears, I'd always wanted to try the sport, and this seemed like the perfect opportunity to get confident in the waves. Sure enough, by the end of the three-day trip – and more wipeouts and saltwater sinus flushing than I care to mention – I was riding waves as big as me.
What struck me was the faith I had to muster. Unlike, say, running, which you can do anywhere, anytime, wanted; I was nervous. But you can't waste a good wave; you don't know how many you'll get. I realised I had to go for it, imperfectly.
