Ever since the introduction of the KdF Wagen in 1938 at the Stadt des KdF-Wagens cornerstone ceremony, toy manufactures have jumped on the bandwagon and produced their own versions of the people’s car in miniature form. Naturally, German toy companies were first out of the blocks, with the likes of Märklin, Distler, JNF, TippCo, CKO and G. Fischer, to name a few, all coming out with versions of the car. But another German toy firm by the name of HUKI produced a small scale KdF Wagen that is considered amongst the rarest of all VW toys today.
The HUKI toy firm produced many types of tin toys from its Nürnberg-area location. The name was an abbreviation of the company’s owner, Hubert Kienberger, and the models followed the common practice of VW toy manufacturers in the 1940s and ’50s of not putting the name, or any identifying insignia, on the toys it produced, making life difficult for collectors like me 70+ years later!
