KNP HISTORY: History of camps

Origin of the name Pafuri and other names in the vicinity

The place where the borders of Mozambique, South Africa and Zimbabwe meet close to the mouth of the Luvuvhu River, is known as Crooks Corner. The name originates from the early poaching/hunting and illegal ‘blackbirding’ (recruitment of labour, especially miners) activities in the area. Culprits would move between the three countries to avoid arrest.

Hapi is the name of a creek, waterhole and hill just south of the Luvuvhu River. It is a Tshivenda name of a person that lived there in earlier times.

The Limpopo River forms the northern boundary of the Park with Zimbabwe.

The name comes from the Ndebele word ilimphopho meaning ‘river of the waterfall’. The transfrontier conservation area comprising the Kruger National Park, Limpopo National Park and Gonarezhou National Park is called the Great Limpopo Tranfrontier Conservation Area (GLTFCA).
