Financial rethink is needed

“Money is the root of all evil”, or so the old saying goes. And while not being the sole reason for the current issues within the game, money, or lack of it, has certainly been a significant factor. Back in 2017-18 we were all told that cash from CVC would allow the game to thrive. Instead we have seen three Premiership clubs having financial issues: Saracens, too much, while Wasps and Worcester too little.

The reality is new-found wealth was not used to resolve problems but to allow the current way to be maintained.

Although many issues need to be resolved, there are two that need toprioritised. Controls must be in place to stop any repeat of the bankruptcy situations recently experienced ever happening again. This not only impacts on the two clubs directly involved but the knock-on effect of the lost fixtures hits the whole Premiership’s finances.
