When working on development of the 996-generation 911, I tried to keep the design as compact as possible within the restrictions and parameters set by Porsche's engineering department. This new model (the first water-cooled 911) had a brand-new engine, a new gearbox and new suspension, meaning there was no way it could retain the proportions of previous 911s.
