On her mother’s side, the Backhouse family boasts a long line of botanists and nurserymen, most notably William Backhouse (1807–1869), who was an early pioneer in daffodil (Narcissus) hybridisation and the first in a dynasty of hybridisers spanning three generations over 100 years.
