The Daly River in the Northern Territory is a big tidal river populated by crocodiles, anglers and big barramundi. I’ve spent a lot of time on this river and have seen it in all its moods. The river is constantly changing after each wet season where new snags appear and older ones wash away.
I first fished the Daly in 1991, and since this time have spent nearly a year of my life on this fantastic wild river. During that time this dynamic river has moved considerably. When I first fished it there was a big snag near Alligator Heads hard up against the steep reedy bank. Over three decades that snag is now about 200 metres up the sandy bank on the other side of the river, and now holds corellas and egrets instead of barramundi. The river has carved a different track in the time I have visited that is very visible in a short time frame, and similarly, a lot of other things about the Daly River have changed.
