I broke into the Cambridge team aged 16. From the outside, it might seem like horrible long-ball stuff, but there was method to John’s madness. He played the statistics and forged such a strong unit. It was successful, too. As a lad, I had to chuck buckets of freezing cold water over our players before kick-off, as John wanted them fired up for the game! He had so many little ideas like that – all to get an edge. It taught me the value of team spirit and helped to turn me into a proper professional.
