VEGETABLES Growing cowpeas: Part 1

The cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) is an annual herb that can be erect, trailing, climbing or bushy. It has a strong taproot and many spreading lateral roots.

It requires few inputs, as the plant's root nodules can fix atmospheric nitrogen. This, and the fact that it can be used for intercropping, makes it ideal for small-scale farmers. The entire plant can be used for forage.
