The hunting of shrimp and prawns takes a bit of preparation — or at least acquisition, as you will need some kit. As a former cabinetmaker, for me that acquisition is always a matter of making the stuff myself, and perhaps you too would be prepared to spend a day in the shed making a prawn or shrimp net. As with crab pots, all this may take some organising, hence my covering this topic a couple of months before either activity is in season — April to June and then September for shrimp, and throughout the summer and early autumn for prawns.
The words ‘shrimp’ and and the prawn is the common prawn, These are very different creatures with very different habitats and need to be caught in different ways. The brown shrimp requires a sandy seabed, with the common prawn preferring rocky, seaweed-covered shores. The latter may be caught in several ways, but for the brown shrimp, there is only one. Both are found in suitable habitats all around the coast of Britain, so you will have little trouble finding them.
