Budget Befuddlement

I just finished the article in your December 2022 issue about building a sub-$1,000 AMD machine and thought I’d share my two cents on a couple of aspects.

First, isn’t it disappointing that in the current day, “budget” PC hardware can’t handle 1080p games smoothly on the highest settings? How long has 1080p been around now… 15 years? And while we say “budget”, that GPU costs $300, which is twice as much as the budget CPU. That is a really poor state of affairs.

Second, and I know this is far more subjective, I was surprised at how much emphasis the article, and particularly the summary, put on aesthetics. I know is like a hotrod magazine for PCs but for me, aesthetics are the least important part, especially for a cheap PC. If I had to put numbers on it, I'd say performance is 75 percent, upgradability 15 percent,
